So I had the JMP Bass and was really digging the Marshall tones I was getting from it. I never planned to buy the JMP Bass but it was one of these opportunities you need to grab. And the Plexi was the same. I stumbled on the ad on a Belgian site and the description didn’t make sense. There were some bad pics in the ad but it looked like a smallbox plexi so I knew I had to be quick. I had some troubles getting in touch with the seller but got thru to him, drove to his place to have a look and walked out with a 1968 50w smallbox plexi. It is in a good condition, it no longer has the logo and the headshell is scratched but who cares about that? As is the case with a lot of the old 50-watters, this one also has a replacement transformer. It’s an old Drake transformer and after a check up by Freeqi it was deemed to be a good one and the right one for this amp.
A lot has been said and written about these old beasts and I can honestly say that playing a plexi LOUD is something every guitar player should be able to do, at least once in his life. There are so many killer sounds in these machines, they really are encyclopedias of tones. A lot of people think of these as balls-to-the-walls rock amps but there’s so much you can do with them.
I don’t plan on gigging with this amp, it’s to valuable to take out on the road and I certainly don’t want to ruin it. So I have a lot fun playing it at home. Whatever guitar you plug in, it always seems to sound “right” and it gives me a lot of pleasure fur sure!
